Part 4
Part 5

The evening wanes; and as the sun disappears upon the horizon, embers and firelight spread across the camp, warming eager bodies and radiating a welcome heat against the cooling night breeze.

Tonight, the moon hangs high from the sky, spilling soft, silvery webs of moonlight across the trees and lakes, blanketing all in its ethereal glow. Yet, beneath this lovely façade of stillness, something lurks, dark and sinister beneath the velvet cover of evening.

The tent is elaborately decorated with furs and blankets, a bed dominates the centre of the room and Youngwoong turns his head so he can ignore the bile rising to his throat, so he doesn’t have to look at the rich mahogany wood, or think about what its opulence implies.

He had narrowly escaped this once today, but now, with the way his arms are chained to the wooden eaves, iron secure and heavy around his wrists, escape, even the very thought of it, is impossible.

The silence in the tent in suffocating, but Youngwoong has no words to break it with. The fragile camaraderie he thought they had found, the warm understanding he had seen and sought comfort from in the Crown Prince’s eyes, just hours before -- had they all been a figment of his imagination?

Now, Yunho stands before him, pacing the room in slow, even steps . His expression distant, aloof and unreadable. Despite his outwardly calm manner, Youngwoong recognizes the fury; dark, dangerous and barely concealed just bubbling beneath the surface.

Youngwoong refuses to cower despite the bile that sits hot and heavy at the back of his throat at the thought of what is to come. if Yunho was a leader who condoned forced brutality within his ranks, Youngwoong would have been mistaken to seek his friendship.

“You have the blood of ten of my men on your hands,” Yunho says finally, breaking the cloying silence of the room. The quiet tone of his voice does little to mask the contempt that drips heavy from his words “You, a lowly servant of Sila.”

Youngwoong tilts his head defiantly, his hair catching in the firelight. “Perhaps your decision to conquer Sila was not perfectly thought out, if even the basest of Sila’s servants could defeat ten of your soldiers.”

“Perhaps,” Yunho returns, quietly meeting Jaejoong’s glare with a calm, even look, “I have been too civil and you have forgotten that you are my prisoner. My men follow my orders and defiance to them is personal insult to me.”

“I would not be so quick to acknowledge their actions as my own if I were in your position,” Youngwoong spits, eyes flashing. “They bring nothing but shame and dishonour upon your house.”

“You forget your place!”

“And you forget your honor!”

“You would do well to hold your tongue,” Yunho grits out, the veins in his forearm straining against his skin. Youngwoong braces himself for a blow that doesn’t come. “Lest you wish to see a display of Goryean strength. I would see twenty Silean women and children dead for every Goryean life you have taken today.”

“No!” Youngwoong’s response is instantaneous, his mask of indifference crumbling at Yunho’s words. “These villages contain nothing but humble peasants and farmers. This war is not their responsibility; it is not their fight.”

“You care for them?” Yunho says, archly, a hint of incredulity coloring his tone.

“They are innocent!”

“As were the men who you struck down in the square today.”

“They were no innocents,” Youngwoong spits. “They were immoral. Perverse.”

“Were they?” Yunho questions flatly, and Youngwoong bites his tongue, not wanting to rise to the bait. “They are no worse, no more perverse than the Silaen troops who burned and pillaged their own serfs.”

“I know not of what you speak, but if you must punish someone for these crimes, let it be me.” Youngwoong says softly, “I gave offence without consequence for my actions.”

“I don’t intend to let today’s incident go unpunished,” Yunho says darkly. “Bring in the boy.”

A guard carries in the five-year-old Silaen child. He looks lost, his eyes search the large tent, settling on Youngwoong, then Yunho. Youngwoong feels his heart ache at the fear in the boy’s eyes. The commotion outside the tent had frightened him and he has large tear streaked stains down his face. He looks imploringly at Youngwoong, hiccupping.

Yunho nods at the guard meaningfully and he draws his sword. “Perhaps now you understand your situation a little better.”

“Please,” Youngwoong begs, straining against the chains that hold him to inaction. “He’s just a child.”

“Those men you killed,” Yunho says, grimly. “They were someone’s son, someone’s father, someone’s lover. Who will answer to their grieving families?”

“Surely not a child of barely five,” Youngwoong pleads, “I—“

Yunho grabs his chin, his touch burning into Youngwoong’s skin, silencing the words in his throat

“The lesson you should learn from this,” Yunho grits out, fingers tightening against Youngwoong skin, “is that Goryeo will take Sila. I had hoped we would do this without having to raze the city to the ground or butcher innocent villagers. But if you refuse to submit to me, I have no qualms about killing every, single one of your people.”

He releases Youngwoong’s chin and Youngwoong jerks away, breathing hard.

“You can save these people,” Yunho says sharply, “or you can destroy them.”

The guard draws the broadsword to the boy’s throat and he squeals as the metal touches his skin. Fat blubbering tears fall from his face as he wails and wails, the sound like knives cutting into Youngwoong’s heart. The guard presses the cold blade even more firmly against his skin and tells him to be quiet. He shakes silently; so fearful he almost wets himself.

“I understand.” Youngwoong murmurs, his eyes belaying little of the fear he feels, “Ask of me what you want and I will do it.”

“I’m curious,” Yunho says, admiring the curves of the Silean bow he had confiscated from Youngwoong the first night. “You say you are a servant of Sila, yet you are skilled in archery and combat. Both of which would suggest a position in the noble houses. Your garments are crude, but your skin is soft. You are no common farmer.”

Wordlessly, Youngwoong watches him.

“You speak a refined tongue. You neither stumble over your words nor falter. You are well versed in it,” Yunho’s eyes narrow, and Youngwoong fights not to look away from his heated gaze. “Which means you use it often.”

“Does this surprise you?” Youngwoong asks, hating the way his voice trembles on the last word. He clenches his fists, drawing strength from the memory of Siwon’s face, pale and wan in battle. He could not fail Sila here, not like this. “The qualities of which you speak are common amongst folk in the capital. There are thousands like me, with more credit to their reputation.”

“I suggest,” Yunho says, harshly, his slight nod toward the Silaen child a thinly veiled threat. ”You do not play games with me.”

Youngwoong stares ahead steadfastly and says nothing.

“What is your name?”

The boy makes a stifled sound and Youngwoong’s attention snaps to him; immobile and helpless. What was his kingdom worth if he could not save but the most deserving of its people?

The boy makes a sound, his eyes desperate and pleading.

“It’s Jaejoong,” Jaejoong says softly, dropping his gaze to the floor. Everything he had fought for, his honor, his country, Siwon; now they stand before him, crushed and defeated. “Kim Jaejoong.”

“Jaejoong,” Yunho murmurs, noting the royal suffix, “So you are of royal blood.”

Jaejoong flinches at the title.

“My fair golden prince. Perhaps you are worth more to me than I initially imagined.”

“Knowledge of my status changes little,” Jaejoong says. “The King has spoken, I am but a replaceable pawn. The only thing I can do is to serve as an outlet for you to vent your frustrations. Kill me,” Jaejoong implores, “and let the boy go.”

“No,” Yunho tells him, gesturing to the guard who nods grimly.

“Take him outside. He won’t want to watch this.”

I still cannot accept Jaejoong's father's willingness to let Jaejoong die.

Jaejoong's sacrificing so much for his people.

Thank you for updating.

there's only a few chapters left and yet I'm still unable to see how this fic can have a satisfying ending...Right now YH is still a hot headed leader who only listens to one side, whereas JJ is an honourable prince that is taken for granted by everyone. I'm not sure how this can end well for both sides and how YH can ever be deserving of Jaejoong...they don't even have feelings for one another yet so I can't imagine them getting to that point in only 3 chapters...I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

thank your for reading and raising a valid point! when i first plotted winter blossom, i thought i put up a ten chapter end as a placeholder. but considering i have at least 16,000 words left to publish i don't think this story will be ending anytime soon. i do think though, that after chapter ten i will start with a new arc of the story, albeit the same plot point.

Don't hurt Jae Yunho (T_T) This is all so unfair to JaeJae (T_T) His father wished him death, he fought for his life & dignity yet Yunho wants to punish him for selfdefense in a war... If he hurts Jae I am really going to dislike Yunho in this story (T_T)

I had guess Yunho's soldiers were doing things that were not appropriate.

But then again Yunho's character shows that he is person who will do what it takes to win a war even if he must shed innocent blood.
99lbs above gravitycountingcarbs on February 24th, 2014 06:29 am (UTC)
thanks for the comment! ;)

i definitely agree with you, but its also that side of yunho that i feel makes him interesting to write. even though he has his morals, clearly he has a streak of ruthlessness about him, and he is willing to do anything to protect his country's best interest. perhaps in this aspect jaejoong would be a good personality to temper that ruthlessness.
sheerasyjsheerasyj on February 23rd, 2014 02:18 pm (UTC)
Oh god! Yunho! Aahhhh..why he did not investigate the incident further?! what kind of ruler are you?? ugh..*angry* ..and what is he planning to do to poor jj?? can't stand the suspense!!!

Ahh... there is so much tension and misunderstandings between Yunho and Jaejoong and only 3 chapters left. I wonder how it is gonna end...

You mentioned some JaeChun so I am hoping that he will come and rescue Jae and they will live happily ever after ^^ (I had too much YunJae this month...)

And God, I hope Yunho won't attempt to rape Jae or something.

Anyway, good chapter but a little too short. ♥

thanks for reading! initially i definitely intended for this to be a jaechun centered fic... but this fic is really writing itself and i have no control over it so I'm not sure what will happen next...

but you raised a valid point - i don't see this fic ending in 3 chapters! when i first plotted winter blossom, i thought i put up a ten chapter end as a placeholder. but considering i have at least 16,000 words left to publish i don't think this story will be ending anytime soon. i do think though, that after chapter ten i will start with a new arc of the story, albeit continuing from the same plot point.
